Whole barley contains around 13-15% of its weight as chaff. When milled with modern machines, the chaff is finely ground (disappears in the flour) and does not separate easily (it can’t be blown off by a breath). However, when we sieved 300 grams of Barley flour, we obtained 18 grams of chaff, which is 6 grams per 100 grams of flour. This indicates that nearly 9 grams of the chaff had already blended into the flour. Therefore, we don’t sieve our barley flour and use it with the entire chaff intact.

Barley Flour with outer Chaff / Husk
Barley Flour with outer Chaff / Husk ~ a substance covering the BRAN:
The West praises whole carbs, i.e. grains with the bran, but when we read the Ahadith carefully, the flour used in the times of Rasoolullah was also having the outer chaff / husk. Read the Ahadith below:
Narrated Abu Hazim: I asked Sahl bin Sa`d, “Did Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم ever eat white flour?” Sahl said, “Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم never saw white flour since Allah sent him as an Apostle till He took him unto Him.” I asked, “Did the people have (use) sieves during the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم?” Sahl said, “Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم never saw (used) a sieve since Allah sent him as an Apostle until He took him unto Him,” I said, “How could you eat barley unsifted?” he said, “We used to grind it and then blow off its husk, and after the husk flew away, we used to prepare the dough (bake) and eat it.” Sahih al-Bukhari 5413
It was narrated from Umm Ayman that she sifted some flour and made a loaf of bread for the Prophet He said: “What is this?” She said: “It is food that we make in our land, and I wanted to make a loaf of it for you. He said: “Return what you sieved and knead it again.” Sunan Ibn Majah 3336
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was ascetic in this world, eating the kind of food that poor people ate, along with whatever Allah had granted him from the world. In this hadith, Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her)—who was the Prophet’s freed servant, caretaker, and the mother of Usama ibn Zaid—narrates that she sifted some flour, separating the fine white flour from the coarse bran and husk, and made a loaf of bread from it for the Prophet He asked, “What is this?” She replied, “It is the food we make in our land.” Umm Ayman was from Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then said, “Return what you sifted and knead it again.”
They had the stone grinders which were unable to grind the whole chaff, so they blew the ground flour & the bigger particles of chaff flew away, but the remaining flour still had some part of the chaff.
With the modern equipment & grinding machines today, we get the whole barley flour which is ultra-fine & almost all the chaff/husk is powdered, but if you still want to reduce it, you can sieve the flour & some larger particles of the chaff can be removed. Personally, I never do this, as the Barley’s chaff is insoluble fiber & it helps in bowel movement. Studies have shown that barley fiber (from chaff & bran) not only promotes gut motility but may help improve insulin sensitivity and cholesterol levels, particularly when consumed regularly as part of a whole-food diet.
